Why Christianity Hates Witchcraft

Being raised Southern Baptist I have always wondered why Christian churches preach so heavily against witchcraft, when it's a way to grow closer to the Divine, learn about yourself, and learn more about the world around me. Reading in the Bible I find numerous cases of leaders consulting mediums, diviners, and prophets. And often the prophets worked magic! So what is the problem? Power.
Power is, and has always been, the motivating force behind the Jewish and later Christian hierarchies. Tell the people the only way to communicate with the Divine is through a select few, and the people are dependent on you. They need rain for their fields and a blessing for their children? If they can't sacrifice to their god(s), bless, pray, or worship without the consent of a few, the people are powerless. All control over what they think, believe and are able to do is stripped away. This doesn't mean that a leadership structure isn't needed. A leadership structure should be there to help teach and train, to pass on knowledge. Not to be a dictatorship that restricts or forbids contact with the Divine.

1 Samuel 15:23 in the New King James version reads, "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry." In the time that 1 Samuel was written the Jewish people wanted a King of the Jews to rule them and unify them as a new nation. The Jewish leaders realized that to do this would destroy their relationship with the government, and they would no longer receive the protection and benefits of being citizens. So what do they do? Create fear. To do witchcraft - sacrifice to your god yourself without a priest, to divine your own future, and to pray to your god directly - is rebellion. How can you be unified if the people are rebellious? Look what happened to Moses. The people rebelled and God punished them. Believe you are right and become stubborn? Then you are a sinner and as bad as the idolaters who worship the gods of the ruling government as well as Y-HW-H, the Jewish god. All past stories for the Jews taught that those who worship false gods are the reason they've been enslaved. God will be mad at them for having different opinions and punish them yet again.

A good Jew would be very familiar with the books of the Law and Moses. Deuteronomy 32:35-36 reads, "Vengeance is Mine, and recompense; their foot shall slip in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things to come hasten upon them.’ 36 “For the LORD will judge His people and have compassion on His servants, When He sees that their power is gone, and there is no one remaining, bond or free." Disobey and god will take vengeance. He will destroy you and your entire family; he will be sure all power is stripped from you. Power and fear.

Power remained the motivating force as the Holy Roman Catholic Church sprang up under the Roman Empire. Power dictates their command structure, their influence over people, and why their priests are raised above the "lay people". The priests were always from the highly educated. They studied history and the Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic texts. They knew that fear and power are the cornerstones for the control they lust after. Their priests were deemed the average persons way of communicating with the Divine. They teach that the Divine will not communicate directly with all people, only through Saints or their ordained ones.

But what happens when people, these witches, laugh at them and say they have direct connection with the Divine? That what the Church teaches is obviously wrong and the people can know this through their own experiences? Their power base is threatened. The whole reason they exist becomes obsolete. Persecutions, wars, and genocides ensue to terrorize the people and to create an iron fist for the Church to rule with. Don't follow the Church? Burn in eternal flames with no rescue. Commit a heresy (the definition of which changes every 50 years if not sooner)? Burn in eternal flames with no rescue.

Judaism, even though its prophets were diviners and Jewish mysticism is still a practiced form of magic, has always taught against witchcraft to maintain power over its people. The Catholic Church has continued this practice, and proclaimed the torture and slaughter of millions to maintain their power. Power and fear, that's why Christianity preaches against witchcraft.

You are have a spark of the Divine within you.
You can communicate directly with the Divine and experience the Divine in a number of ways. It is not wrong to worship, pray, and divine. Each person is an agent of free will on their own path of spiritual development. A High Priestess or High Priest can help you along your path by passing on knowledge and techniques to you.
They are never a replacement for your connection with the Divine; being a witch means you are responsible for yourself.

Woman Burned Alive in Nepal For Witchcraft

From the reporters at CNN we bring you this tragic story of a mother beaten and burned alive after being accused of witchcraft. The following is from CNN.com, minus all the ads between every few sentences.

"Nepalese woman accused of witchcraft and burned alive

February 18, 2012|From Manesh Shrestha, CNN
A 40-year-old mother of two was burned alive in central Nepal after she was accused of being a witch, police said Saturday. Dhegani Mahato was attacked and set on fire by family members and others after a shaman allegedly accused her of casting a spell to make one of her relatives sick, Police Officer Hira Mani Baral said. The attack occurred Friday in Bagauda in Chitwan district, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, Baral said by telephone.

Police arrested 10 people, including two shamans, five women and an 8-year-old boy, in connection with the burning."Those arrested have confessed to their crime and will be charged with murder," Baral said. Mahato had just finished cleaning a cowshed early in the morning when she was attacked, Baral said. She was beaten with sticks and rocks before being doused with kerosene and set afire, an attack witnessed by her 9-year-old daughter, according to the local police report.

Neighbors told police they were alerted to the attack but by then it was too late to save her. Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai appealed to the people not to heed to shamans and faith healers. The government announced 1 million Nepalese rupees (about $14,000) in compensation for Mahato's two children."

Sister Kills Brother, Accused Him of Witchcraft

Relatives Accused in Witchcraft Killing
Kristy, a 15 year old boy, was killed by his sister and her boyfriend Christmas Day 2010 in London, England after days of being tortured along with his 2 others sisters. The eldest sister's boyfriend accused them of sorcery and witchcraft. The sisters being tortured with Kristy confessed to avoid further torture and joined in torturing Kristy until he was drowned.

Spells & Wishes

Isn't the point of spells to grant wishes? Yes, but even wishes take work. If someone else is performing the spell for you, or if you're just tossing a coin in a wishing well, you still have preparation and follow up to do for the wish to work. Energy flows along the path of least resistance wether it's electricity, water, air, pressure or magick. Saying a wish will never come true creates a block to the energy of the wish. It's like putting up a damn to block the wish from getting to you and affecting your life. So before doing a spell or asking for a wish, you must truely believe it will work. You must be open and ready for it to work. Not being ready for a spell to work is a mistake even the most advanced witch can make.

I'm a fan of the tv series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the show Buffy is killed and Willow, a powerful witch, plans a spell to bring her back to life. The spell works, and Buffy comes back to life where she was left. In her grave. Before doing a spell or asking a wish, be ready to receive it! After completing your spell or wishing, let it go. Release the energy with the confidence it will do your will. Then forget about it. Don't worry or be negative about it. That will only work to pull the energy back to you, creating fractures in the energy and possibly dissolving the effectiveness of your spell or wish. A common rule in witchcraft is to not speak of a spell once it is done, at least until the sun sets again.

A Goal Without a Plan is a Wish

Prayers Against Witchcraft

It's fascinating to me that there are so many adamantly opposed to witchcraft who don't even know what they're praying against. There is a blog called "Prayer Against Marine Witchcraft" I came across tonight. Happy to find another form of witchcraft I don't yet know, I scanned through the blog. If they're praying against it, there must be an explanation to describe what they're praying against, right? Turns out "marine witchcraft" is a term meaning any form of magical work in which one prays to or is familiar with water spirits.

What's sad to see is that followers of the blog don't even know what it is they're praying about. For example,

"Rosaliar says:
I need urgent prayer, I joint a fire church in my home town and without my knowledge I was initiated in witchcraft by the former pastor, I just found this out when we held a 40day fasting and demons start to manifest and I was one of them in someones body, nobody believe me when i say Im not aware of myinvolvement , please pray for me"

Rosaliar, you can't be initiated without your knowledge. Initiation is like baptism, it requires consent and willingness. And demons started to manifest after a 40 day fast? Awfully suspicious seeing how everyone's blood sugar was low, good chance they were dehydrated, and if you've never experienced fasting before there's a good chance you were hallucinating or travelling astrally.

Why is it that the Abrahamic religions of Christianity, Islam and Judaism are so opposed to witchcraft? Well according to 1 Samuel 15:23 "The sin of witchcraft is rebellion." Note this was written when there was infighting amongst the Jews over who the rightful King of the Jews should be, because they were sick of being ruled by Judges, so any form of rebellion could quickly turn into a riotous mob. (Hence why in the Bible 1 & 2 Samuel are after Judges and 1 & 2 Kings are after Samuel.) Also, it is argued that witchcraft is rebelling against God by claiming to have the powers of God. John 10:34 "Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?" But there I go again, actually reading and studying the Bible. Silly witch, reading is for priests! Oh wait, this isn't Medieval Times...

I personally use witchcraft as a way to grow closer to the Divine. Sadly, this lack of education will continue to blossom periodically around the world as zealousness extinguishes intelligence.

Zealousness extinguishes Intelligence

My Country & My Flag, NOT My God & My Religion

Every time I hear politicians begin arguing they clearly divide the country between conservative Christian Republicans and atheist liberal Democrats. So where should pagans stand? The general stereotype is that pagans are extremely liberal, welfare leeches, and anti-military.

Where does this stereotype come from? Well, the hippies. As anti-witchcraft laws were repealed in the 50's, a wave of people interested in witchcraft came forward and founded the modern religion of Wicca. This wave of returning to old pagan beliefs coincided with the anticultural movement of the 60's and anti-war movement of the 70's. Wicca became entangeled with this anti-cultural atmosphere of experimentation and many experimented with drugs and sex - really anything that rebelled against the societal norms of conservative Christiandom. Then they continued to adopt anti-war viewpoints during the Vietnam War. Because the Celts were so anti-war, right? Please.

Unfortunately, subsequent generations continued drug use and superliberal views. So what about those of us witches who are anti-420 (smoking marijuana) or abusing any substance that alters one's ability to function, anti-illegal drug use, pro-military, and for the political values which support rewarding people for working hard and believe that people should support themselves rather than being dependent on the government? We exist!

The belief that to be patriotic must mean following a certain religion is ridiculous. The founding fathers were a mix of Christians, Deists, Atheists and who knows what else. Ever read this piece in history class? (Note: 's' were written as 'f ' back then.)
"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.." 1796 Treaty with Tripoli
(Yes, we've been at war with various Muslim factions since the 1700s).
So where does the logic spring from which dictates that to be for this country we must be Christian? Some point to the Pledge of Allegiance; "One nation under God". Did you know that the words "under God" weren't added until the Communism scare of the 1950's? As it is "to the flag of the United States of America" wasn't added until the early 1920's (the Pledge was written in 1892).
I pledge allegiance to my flag and am loyal to my country and to the freedoms it was founded on. My patriotism has everything to do with my country, and nothing to do with my religion. My political viewpoints have everything to do with my knowledge and logic, not what my religion mandates I believe or don't.
Let's strive to end the ridiculous belief that a persons religion dictates their political affiliation and vice versa.
"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State."
- Thomas Jefferson to a committee of the Danbury Baptist Association of Connecticut, Jan. 1, 1802
Politics are About My Flag and My Country,
NOT My God and My Religion.

Why Didn't My Spell Work?

Now everyone who has ever tried spells has had them fail from time to time. What causes this? You researched the moon phases, bought the right tools, gathered the perfect herbs and carefully wrote your own spell. You performed it flawlessly, but it still didn't work. Don't worry, this happened to me last month! It doesn't mean you're a horrible spellcaster, it means you have something to learn. What a great opportunity!

The most common reasons spells don't work are:
  • Doubt
  • Rejecting
  • Second Guessing
  • Outside Interference
The solution to each of these is easy, but takes continuous practice and daily discipline:
  • Use the Magickal Mindset - it IS possible!
  • Harness the Law of Attraction
  • Let it go
  • Empower Yourself.
Self-confidence is often the first, and most difficult, obstacle to overcome. If you write a spell and are thinking, "This is crazy, it can't work". Then set up your tools and cast your Circle while thinking, "Why would the universe give this to me?" Then perform the spell while concentrating on, "I don't deserve this", why do you think it would work?? Every step of the way you're broadcasting to the Universe reasons why your spell shouldn't work, why the Universe shouldn't care, and that you don't deserve it.

So remove the obstacle - change your mindset by retraining your brain to the Magickal Mindset. Throughout the day periodically stop and ask yourself, "What was I just thinking?" Recall your last few thoughts. Then ask, "Was that how an effective witch thinks?" If it wasn't, then reword the thought so it is, and then ACT on it. How many times a day do you think "I'm tired" or "I'm lazy"? Picture a powerful witch. Are they tired or lazy? No! They're energetic and strong. Think "I'm energetic" and "I'm powerful." Become aware of what you're thinking and change your thoughts. "Cogito, ergo sum - I think therefore I am" - Descartes

As you change to the Magickal Mindset encourage yourself by harnessing the Law of Attraction. What you put your energy to will be what comes back to you. "Where your attention goes, your energy flows." Human beings are giant magnets emitting electromagnetic waves, often seen and described as an aura. This energy wave acts as a magnet affecting the world around us. If we concentrate on what we want, it will be drawn to us - and vice versa, so be conscious of where you're directing your energy! We can draw things into our lives by visualizing, hearing, smelling, feeling and gratefully accepting anything we desire. This is the basis of spellcraft. For a more in-depth explanation of how to harness the Law of Attraction, check out "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrnes.

Humans are a unique magnet,  in that we can reverse our polarity in a heartbeat. If you've begun to attract something to you then start thinking "it'll never happen." Well, it won't! You just switched from attracting it to rejecting it. Once you've performed the spell, let it go. The end of a spell is always releasing the energy you've built up out into the universe to do your will, right? Don't yank back what you just did all that work to release! Let it work for you. This is why it is tradition after completing a spell or ritual not to speak about it till the next day, and often to never discuss it.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt. The same is true of your magick. Another person's thoughts, feelings or beliefs can't stop, diminish or alter your spell unless you give them that power. This means two things:
  1. Don't talk about your spell. They can't coax you into doubting yourself if they don't know about it.
  2. Monitor your magick. Routinely cleanse yourself and always shield your spells. As you cast your spell, form a shield of pure confidence around it. No one else's energy is strong enough to break through it - if you believe it, it is so.
If your spell didn't work, be truthful in your review of it. Did you doubt? Did you reject it? Did you second guess? Did you empower others to work against you?

Use the Magickal Mindset, Harness the Law
of Attraction, Let It Go, & Empower Yourself!

Why Do Spells Work?

Some claim that by standing before a candle and reciting words they can change how their boss sees them or stop someone from gossiping about them. Sound like mumbo-jumbo? Well, if they don't know how to raise, direct and control energy, it is. Saying "magical" words on a dark night by candle light doesn't make one a witch, and it won't make a spell work. There is a lot that goes into spellcraft that is, to some, surprisingly quantum physics based.

The theory of quantum entanglement is that two objects can become "entangled". When one of their states is altered, the other's state is altered, even if they're nowhere near each other. This is the basis for correspondences - actions in the universe being symbolized by colors, words, numbers, etc in magick.

A witch practices and trains to learn to attune to energies, like the vibration of a red rose, and amplify that energy. They then direct this controlled energy to a willed purpose, such as amplifying the vibration of the red rose that corresponds to passion, then directing this "passion" energy to attracting a lover.

So a spell done by a novice who is only dabbling probably won't work - might as well just pray. A spell done by someone who can sense energy, is attuned with themselves, and who is attuned with nature has a high probability of working.

Spells work because witches know how to amplify, manipulate, and control energy through the use of correspondences to change the universe - they use quantum physics as naturally as balance when dancing. You don't have to understand quantum physics to be a witch and have your spells work, but it does make gaining the confidence in yourself to do a spell a lot easier. Plus for those who think witchcraft is silliness, knowledge of quantum physics can bring a new appreciation for the powers a witch holds.

Witchcraft is a Craft - it is a delicate balance of art and science.
